Expert SEO Tips

SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization. Quite simply, it's the art of getting the best rank for a certain keyword on Google. Sounds great? First off.. Google is always changing their page rank formula. Lately, the trend has been violating Google Plus's user's privacy to improve search ranking. So, SEO is becoming alot harder over time. Keeping that in mind, it's important to, now:
A) Use Google Webmaster Tools
B) Make a Google Plus page (and try and get as many +1 or whatever they do there as possible)
C) Add social buttons to your website.
D) Sign up for other Google services, such as Youtube, and upload your content to such sites.

Use Metatags to your best ability.

(Our guide on Metatags)
A) Don't keyword stuff. Keyword stuffing, simply, is putting unrelated keywords in your meta tags. Usually Google appreciates 10-20 keywords at the most. Pick keywords that:
  • Are used multiple times in the page
  • Either have a very easy market (few big competitors for the specific keyword when you Google it), or are very targeted (it's OK to attempt and contest some upper level keywords, but don't focus on them until you build momentum and page rank)
  • Don't 'spam' Google. Many websites actually have scrollers or text the same color as the background. Google may even remove you from their listings because of this.
  • Fill up all 53 characters (53 characters show up when you search) of your title metatag. This will give the users more of an idea about the page

Subdomains can be used very effectively. Heres an example of a search for Arid Seas:

    File Names/Alt tag

    A) Don't overuse images. This is a mistake I have made in the past. Simply don't make every bit of content on your site an image. Google can't read the words on your image.
    B) Use the alt tag with images. The idea is that you can simply be listed under Google Images, and it helps Google recognize what type of information is in the content.
    C) Rename your files. Add keywords to the name of your files. Remember, this will disrupt any current back links; so choose if it's really worth it. Long file names are also discredited; so put the 2 most important tags on the page in the file name.

    Backlinks

  • First off, don't sell links. This is another thing that Google will discredit these links.
  • Back links that they link to you are worth more then back links that you link back to (one-sided versus two-sided backlinks).
  • When linking to sites that are unrelated or low quality sites, use the rel="nofollow" attribute, such as <a href="http://www.aridseas.net" rel="nofollow">Arid Seas</a>
  • What I did with animalpalace.org was pretty simple (that site once had 43,000 back links and a page rank of 4); every Saturday I submitted the URL to hundreds of sites, creating back links. This worked well and I gained a ton of back links

    Crawling

  • Remember to keep your site easy to crawl. Have content links on every page. This is simple; with search engine optimization one goal is to make the website easy to crawl so search engines can optimize every page.
  • Google suggests making a site map. Here is a free tool to making your own site map on your website.

    Additional don'ts

  • Redirects. Redirect pages always get you thrown down the google rankings as Google doesn't like it, so don't do it.
  • Don't use all frames. Typically the search engines don't see this information.
  • Don't re-spin articles and repost them. Your visitors will grow tired of re-spun content and search engine optimization doesn't work if your users find your site overly boring.

I've pretty much covered all of the common SEO tips. Remember to keep building back links; that's vital to your success, and hey, the more back links you have, the greater chance someone will stumble on your site just by clinking through links.
